Fabric Mouse pad: Tutorial Review

In addition to trying out my own sewing Quests, I frequently flit around the Internet trying to find fun, smaller projects I can do in my spare time when I need a break from more time-consuming endeavors.

This week I tried out the Fabric Scrap Mouse Pad Tutorial from How Joyful. Overall, I really recommend it.

TUTORIAL: Fabric Scrap Mouse Pad

SOURCE: How Joyful

DIFFICULTY: Easy

MousepadChanges:

  • I coated my fabric 3 or 4 times with the Mod Podge
  • I used a fat quarter, instead of fabric scraps. (A fat quarter can be of any fabric type, but is cut differently from bolt fabric: usually 18″ x 22″. When ordering custom fabric, I like to buy a fat quarter first, as these are very cheap and allow you to test out the color, pattern size, and fabric quality before committing to a full yard.)

Recommendations:

  • I’m finding more and more that fat quarter fabric is a little thinner than I’d like, so I think in the future I will try using actual quilting-weighted cotton fabric.
  • The mouse pad was a little thin for me, so if possible I’d like to insert a thinner layer of upholstery foam in between the fabric and the shelf liner.

Viola! A custom-made mouse pad!
